Learning to read

Student

Teaching children to read is one of the best parts of teaching and in the Pre-Prep we encourage children to begin a life-long love of reading. Our primary aim is to develop reading for meaning and enjoyment.

Once the children in Reception are ready, they begin our book banded reading scheme and work their way up through the scheme progressively over their time in the Pre-Prep. Children are encouraged to read these books at home with an adult every night to build consistency, and parents can report on their child’s home reading in the Reading Record log. Teachers will also comment on reading in the log.

Most children are expected to be able to read and enjoy chapter books independently by the end of Year 2.
