Learning to read

Student

Teaching children to read is one of the best parts of teaching, and in the Pre-Prep we encourage children to begin a life-long love of reading. Our primary aim is to develop reading for meaning and enjoyment.

Once the children in Reception are ready, they begin our SPCS Reading Scheme and work their way up through our coloured banded groups of books progressively over their time in the Pre-Prep. Children are encouraged to read these books at home with an adult every night to build consistency, and parents can report on their child’s home reading in the Reading Record log.

All children are expected to be able to read and enjoy chapter books independently by the end of Year 2. Books are changed three times a week and further information can be found on the portal.
