Sport is a key feature of life at SPCS, setting your child up with the physical skills for success, opportunities for personal challenge and a positive attitude to sport to last a lifetime.
Your child will experience a range of sports, both here on our Astro-turf pitch and in our school hall, and at the amazing local sport facilities at Finsbury Park – where we hold our annual Sports Day on the full size athletics track – Coram Fields, John Orwell Leisure Centre, Archbishop’s Park and City Sport.
Sport plays a vital role in character development. Learning to manage oneself and work well in a team are vital lessons in the Prep school years. We foster healthy competition, supporting your child to understand the value of beating a personal best. We actively teach how to cope with winning and losing, building your child’s resilience and ambition. Through sport your child will grow in competence and self-confidence and will learn to communicate effectively with others.
We value fair play and celebrate the characteristics of being a good sport. Every week we award a cup for Athlete of the Week: winners might have won a national trophy in martial arts, saved the day with a spectacular catch at a cricket match or demonstrated grace under pressure in captaincy. Having role models right here in the community inspires ambition and excellence.
Physical Education is taught by specialist PE teachers throughout the school and includes Athletics, Dance, Games and Gymnastics. We encourage maximum participation, offering a range of optional after school clubs to allow additional focus and develop new enthusiasms.
Each year group has a morning of specialist games coaching. All pupils play football, netball, hockey and cricket. As well as a highly competitive house tournament system, we play fixtures against other schools throughout the year from Year 3 upwards. Our pupils proudly represent the school in football, netball, hockey, cricket, tennis and tag rugby.
Head of PE and Games, Ashleigh Kirby, will be very happy to discuss any aspect of school sport with you and can be contacted at akirby@spcs.london.sch.uk.
